Nelson’s Last Tape – July 3, 1989

I got so wrapped up in this guys life… as he documented his daily routine in NYC during the 80’s AIDS crisis… It’s like watching a long forgotten realty TV show from the distant past. It’s neat to think people are watching his daily life unravel decades later.. the hurt, the betrayals, the good times, just everything. It’s kind of sobering to watch… when you know how the stories of some of the people end, especially his. Not all of their lives ended tragically, there were a few celebrities spawned from the group… which I think is very neat… esp since they had no idea at the time who they were becoming or how important they would end up being.. I’m sure Nelson enjoys knowing, wherever he may be, that his video journals are touching lives that weren’t even born yet when he made them.

Nelson Sullilvan departed earth a few hours after making this video. Video by Nelson Sullivan; edited by Steve Lafreniere for an exhibit at the Gavin Brown Enterprise in New York City in the early 2000s
