I Just Watched “Shoney’s – Life in America” on YouTube

I used to love the Shoneys salad bar. I first started going there with my grandparents and great grandparents after church on Sundays. It was always a treat. We would go to the one on 5th Ave by Marshall. We always had to wait to be seated because they were so busy on Sundays. They tore the Shoneys by Marshall a long time ago. There is a Captain D’s there now. Shoneys had the best fish platter. I never tasted anything quite like it since then.

In the 90’s I started going to the Shoneys off of Route 60 with mom and my sisters a lot. We always enjoyed it. I can see what it looks like in my mind as I write this. When I met Bob, we would also go there. He had the buffet schedule on the phone. I think he attached it to their phone number on Google contacts. I believe it’s still there. I’m not even sure why Bob’s contacts are synced to mine … or at least several of them are…

The last Shoneys in Huntington closed after Easter in 2018. Easter Sunday was the last day they were open. I remember I wanted to go so I could see Larry one last time before they closed. He was a waiter there. I would love to know whatever happened to him.

I enjoyed going there to eat. I went there and ate by myself a lot. I really miss it. I think the one in Charleston is still open but I’m not sure.
