I’m Watching this now, it’s really bothering me how some people were treated during this era (some are still living in fear). It especially bothered me when I watched a group of 900 refugees, who were trying to escape the Nazis, get turned away from Cuba. They headed there bc they knew ahead of time the US would not let them in. They were hopeful they could escape the gas chambers.

The Cuban government would not let them dock, so they sailed to the US, where they waited on the coast of Florida for five days appealing to the US to let them dock. They thought highly of Franklin Rosevelt and were certain he wouldn’t let them down. After five days, they sent an urgent message directly to Rosevelt but it was ignored. They were forced to head back towards Germany.
The faces of the people on that boat broke my heart. The feelings of hopelessness had to be overwhelming and gut wrenching. A couple of people on the boat committed suicide after learning they would have to return to face the Nazis.
They knew that by going back they would be sent to their certain deaths. Of the 900 people on the ship, 600 were killed in the concentration camps.
Why are there people in this world who begrudge certain others of their very existence? I think about that sometimes and it really upsets me.
This documentary is one of a fifteen part series hosted by Peter Jennings. Several people who are probably no longer with us now were interviewed. But their stories will live indefinitely because of this series.
All of this happened a life time ago, they need not worry about this world any longer, they are finally at peace..
